One reason I enjoy writing is because I get a way to untangle thoughts in my brain: contemplations on what motivates people, what makes a villain, how people manipulate one another, and a great variety of other Big Thoughts that would otherwise seem like the warblings of a madwoman.
With The Memory Jumper, I got to explore memory and self-image, and the importance of it. We are made up of bits of memory that have locked themselves into how we see ourselves—whether these perceptions were told to us in love or contempt, as truth or fragments of the truth.
Today I’ve compiled 6 journaling prompts that will help you explore your past—not in a way that will have you shredding yourself to pieces or overthinking your existence, but in an honest way.
Find a kind spot in the sun, perhaps with a tree nearby—bring with yourself a favorite beverage, and a snack too—ensure you have some paper and pens. And just allow yourself to freewrite, no phone to distract you, no time to bind you.
Just start with one question: you don’t have to tackle them all today.
- What is a core memory that defines you?
- If you could only live in one memory forever, what would it be and why?
- What is a memory from your childhood you wish you could bottle up and open when you need some whimsy?
- What is something you wish you could remember, but can’t?
- Reflect on a time you did something that made you very proud. Would you do it again?
- Is there a memory you have that subconsciously ties to something you still do to this day? (I.e. Adelaide keeps her hair long to connect with her mother)
CONTINUE THE STORY

For eighteen years, Adelaide has lived in an underground safe house.
Born with the power to manipulate minds, Memory Jumpers like Adelaide pose a threat to the kingdom, and individuals caught with this rare ability are killed immediately.
Although Adelaide dreams of traveling the world as an artist, a normal life is unattainable with her existence outlawed. To make a living, she must work underground with her narcissistic mother Fawn, selling illegal Memory Jumping services to desperate clients.
When Adelaide meets wannabe inventor Mason, he inspires her to leave the safe house and pursue her dreams despite the dangers that lurk on the surface. To find freedom, Adelaide must choose to be brave—but cutting her ties to Fawn may come at a heartbreaking cost.
